17th January – Musical Tips for Life

Musical Tips for Life

Anyone who knows me well will be aware that ‘90s music still has a huge place in my heart. I get excited when Britpop bands play in Norfolk and I love rewatching performances from TOTP or TFI Friday, for example.

Listening to a Britpop playlist on Spotify a few months back, it struck me that there are some really interesting pieces of advice in many ‘90s tracks. As a result, I’ve decided to gather some of those words of wisdom, important guidelines for how to live your life:

Blur – It Could be You
“Don’t worry, if it’s not your lucky number
Because tomorrow there is another”

This always reminds me that luck might not always be on our side, but while we are still alive and kicking, there’s always a chance that things will start looking up for us. One bad day doesn’t have to spell a bad week or month or even year. It would be daft to give up just because something has gone wrong once. It’s always possible to turn things around.

Shed Seven – Let it Ride
“Slow your stride, let it ride”

I take this to mean that actually you don’t need to take everything to heart all the time. Sometimes, it’s best to take things with a pinch of salt and just let it go past without making a fuss. At the end of the day, making a big fuss of someone’s mistake or mishaps is likely only to result in both you and them feeling negatively. Unless it’s absolutely necessary, try to take a step back and push the feelings to one side.

The Bluetones – A Parting Gesture
“I’m not the same person I was a year ago”

Life has a habit of grinding us down, causing us to question everything. Actually, while going through tough times, it can feel atrocious. Take time later on to reflect though and I’ll bet you can see the lessons you’ve learnt and how it’s changed you as a person. Loads of interesting things have happened to me over the past few years. I’ve felt broken and defeated, but I’ve also felt reinvigorated and free. I’ve certainly changed as a person as a result of both positive and negative influences.

So, there you have it… just three important snippets from three fantastic songs. I’ll be back with another instalment of this soon, I’m sure!
